About Project
From the beginning, Hard Truth Distilling has always been a whiskey company. In contrast to traditional mass-production of whiskey, Master Distiller Bryan Smith embraced the craft of the Sweet Mash process—every batch beginning with fresh grains, pure water, and fresh yeast. The result is a whiskey with greater balance, complexity, and a softer mouthfeel. Hard Truth’s custom bottle design mirrors that same level of intention and artistry, inspired by the pioneering legacy of whiskey-making in the surrounding hills of our homeplace distillery.
The bespoke glass is rooted in the tradition of historical flasks. Its tall stature, broad shoulders, and deep punt convey strength and pride in craftsmanship. Intentional imperfections in the glass reinforce the handmade nature of the spirit within. Each cork is unique, carved from the raw outer bark of the Cork Oak tree. The bottle’s bulbed crown and thick lip—hallmarks of historic spirit bottles—are designed to accommodate the natural expansion of the cork, ensuring a firm seal and preserving the integrity of the liquid.
An embossed statement on the back declares:
“Distilled with the Finest Grains & Waters by Indiana's Sweet Mash Pioneers.”
Labels are printed on fine linen paper using opaque inks, foil stamping, and heavy embossing. Designed in two parts, they frame the warm amber whiskey and maximize visibility of the liquid inside. The primary label features the Hard Truth logo, the “Sweet Mash Rye” expression, and vintage-styled typography highlighting its barrel strength and uncut, unfiltered finish. The secondary label notes the Mash Bill, distiller’s description, and unique production details. A hand-applied “Sweet Mash Pioneers” simulated wax seal completes the bottle.
Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye is a truly handcrafted whiskey experience—born of the finest locally-sourced grains, the historic waters of Brown County, and the culinary-forward vision of Bryan Smith. Barrel-aged and finished in hand-crafted oak, it takes on warm amber hues and rich character drawn from the caramelized sugars and tannins of the charred wood. The result is a legendary whiskey—bright with fruity aromatics on the palate, smooth in texture, and a satisfying, fiery finish.
